Découvrir l'Afrique du Sud
Sors ta tête du sable

The Katberg Pass lies just north of the little town of Katberg and west of Hogsback in the scenic Easter Cape. This is a 4X4 enthusiasts and adventure bikers Pass - in the biker fraternity the Pass is rated Orange in good weather and Red in rainy or snowy conditions.

Distance 10.8 km
Gradient average 1:15
Gradient maximum 1:4
Summit 1625 m
Surface Gravel / Dirt Track

The Pass is named after the Kat River whose name was derived from the wild cats that were abundant along the river banks during the nineteenth century.

The Katberg Pass is not suitable for normal vehicles and is best driven in a high clearance, 4WD vehicle and with a minimum of two vehicles in case of a breakdown – there is a very high probability that you will be on the only one on the mountain as you drive the Pass.

The gravel Pass is not easy, it is often rocky, rutted and slippery. Its summit is also its end and the start of the Devils Bellows Pass which too is a 4X4 only Pass – if you choose to drive down rather than up you should note that the descent of the Katberg Pass is very steep with some sections where the gradient is 1:5!

The southern starting point, and foot of the Katberg Pass, is near the Katberg Hotel and Golf Estate and if you choose to start from the north, doing the descent, things get a little more complicated. Your first choice is to travers the Devils Bellows Pass and for this one you will need a good GPS loaded with Tracks4Africa, to navigate the back roads. If you do not wish to travel the Devils Bellows Pass you would need to approach the summit from the west via Blinkwater and Brown's Vale - this is a long and winding road, but exceptionally scenic route.

The most popular and recommended route is the ascent and to include the Devils Bellows Pass as well – be sure to ready up all necessary information though before attempting either of the Passes.
