The seaside village of Muizenberg lies on the north-eastern side of False bay, about 25 km from Cape Town. Muizenberg lies up against the mountain of the same name, en route from Lakeside to Kalk Bay.
This colourful suburb is a wonderous mix of history, culture, architecture and white sand beaches. The beaches are synonymous with surfing and many of the legends would have started out here at this “birthplace of surfing”. The famous colourful change rooms are photographed and pictured by everyone who visits and this landmark look graces many a postcard!
The coastal walk from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay, which includes the historical mile, is a must as it passes some wonderful historical buildings. The prize along the way would be the Het Posthuys, which dates back to 1742 and is one of the oldest buildings in South Africa built by the Dutch East India Company as a toll house.
Spend time exploring the quirky streets of Muizenberg, lined with unique shops, restaurants and a few local craft and food markets. Visit Surfer’s Corner, a popular attraction that draws locals and tourists alike to the famous surfing spot, lined by excellent beachfront shops.
In the evenings, book a show at the Masque Theatre featuring shows from ballet, to comedy and jazz. Muizenberg has plenty of recreation to offer and all literally on your doorstep!

History
As early as the 1600′s, but probably also before, Khoi people used the region as a pastoral home. In 1670 The Dutch East India Company established the area as a cattle farm due to its rich fertile soil. From 1743, the area became one of the first military outposts under the command of Sergeant Wynand Muys and was originally named Muysenburg (Muys’s stronghold).
In 1899, Cecil Rhodes, then at the height of his fame, bought Barkly Cottage on the outskirts of the village and Muizenberg suddenly became fashionable.
"White as the sands of Muizenberg, spun before the gale", so wrote Rudyard Kipling. He was a lover of the Cape and, during his long summer visits here, swam in the sea and walked along this beach, which stretches without a break in a gentle curve for 35 kilometers from the suburb of Muizenberg to Gordon's Bay, below the slopes of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains.
