Badskloof Hiking Trail in Bergsig, Montagu, Western Cape
2.4km / 1-2 Hours / Permit required / Entrance fee payable
Badskloof Hiking Trail is approximately 2,4 km long and connects the Hot Springs with Eyssenhuis / Ou Meul at Joubert Park.
The Trail offers a lovely flat 1 hour walk through Badskloof with its many rock formations, rich bird life and many crag climbing routes.
The trail can get a bit “adventurous” in some places where the occasional flood has caused the water-crossing bridges to get washed away. You might find yourself having to do a bit of a balancing act or some rock hopping - in some places you may even have to take your shoes off!
The Badskloof Cave faces east overlooking the famous Avalon Hot Springs and Montagu Springs Resorts and is part of the 2.4km long Badskloof Trail which joins Avalon Springs with Eyssenhuis and Joubert Park. Unfortunately the cave itself has been defaced of its natural beauty but this does not detract from its superb views.
It is a steep and dangerous hike up the steps to the cave and the chains that cross the path at various points can present a tripping hazard, so please be very careful! There is also a ladder to climb near the top which may not be for the feint-hearted.
The shortest walking distance to the cave is from the Avalon Springs side where the official path over the river starts at S33° 46.017' E20° 06.943’, just past the day visitors area. Here you will need to take off your shoes and socks and rock-hop your way over the river.
