Strandfontein Beach

Strandfontein’s popular beach, situated on the sweeping arc of the False Bay coastline, is famous for its enormous tidal pool; reputed to be the biggest south of the equator.

The movie “Free Willy” about the friendship of a young boy and a killer whale, was filmed in and around this tidal swimming pool.

Outdoor enthusiasts as well as overseas tourists love to frequent this beach, with its long stretches of sand and clear water. The water is warm but in the early summer months the beach can get rather windy and unpleasant.

The beach is known for its safe bathing conditions with voluntary lifesaving clubs like the Strandfontein Lifesaving Club as well as the local NSRI’s station 16 being situated here. In addition, during the Blue Flag season between 1 December and 31 March there are lifeguards on duty.

In season, special events are often held in the beach’s amphitheatre to entertain and amuse beachgoers.

Anglers often frequent this beach, fishing for West Coast line fish such as galjoen and white steenbras.

There is enough parking to accommodate seven hundred vehicles and there is lots of space for everyone on the beach. Local vendors sell ice cream, snacks and cold drinks, and there are three kiosk facilities and a braai area.
