South Africa’s Wild Coast is a truly spectacular stretch of rugged coastline, hills, forests and wild seas. It is here that Bulungula Beach is set deep within this almost entirely rural and culturally fascinating part of the country.

Bulungula Beach is approximately two and a half hours drive from Mthatha and from Coffee Bay, where the popular attraction Hole in the Wall is, and it is recommended that you use a 4X4 vehicle on this gravel road as the trip could take double the time in a 2-wheel drive. Shuttles run from Mthatha and should be booked in advance.

The trip is worth every minute to this stunning location. Bulungula Beach is one of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches and lies in the heart of a traditional Xhosa Village. As testimony to its beauty, Lonely Planet named it “Pick of the Wild Coast” in 2012 and it was once described as "one of the World's ultimate ethical travel experiences" by The Rough Guide.

Bulungula Beach is popular for swimming, fishing, surfing and for enjoying sunsets and sunrises. It is advisable to stay for longer than a brief day trip and the Bulungula Lodge offers rustic accommodation on the beachfront.
