The First Challenging Ultra Marathon of the Year!

The Old Mutual Om Die Dam Marathon, once considered the baby brother of the more prominent Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, is consistently voted one of the top national races in the country! Since it was first run in 1991 it has grown into the largest inland ultra-marathon in South Africa, attracting over 10 000 participants each year.

Scenic routes, easy access from Johannesburg and Pretoria and family appeal is only part of what makes this race one of the benchmarks of South Africa, it is also renowned for its superb refreshment stations, with 19 in total on the marathon route. It can be hot in Harties, but organisers know how to look after tired runners. Besides coke and water stations, some also offer bananas, jelly sweets, chocolates, potatoes and other “morale lifters”!

The half marathon and shorter races run mainly around the suburbs of Hartbeespoort and are generally flat, easy and fast. The ultra-marathon, takes runners on a circular loop past landmarks such as over the Dam Wall and under the Arch de Triumph and then past Jasmyn Farm Stall towards Saartijies Nek, the first significant hill to be encountered at approximately 16 kilometres into the race.

A trip to the Hartebeespoort Dam is always a pleasure and the magnificently scenic routes will have you wanting to do a second lap when you reach the finish. Even if you are only supporting or joining in the fun as a spectator, this is one you won’t want to miss!
