Lydenburg Museum in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga
The Lydenburg Museum is situated in Lydenburg in the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.
The Museum was established in 1972 and was originally placed in the centre of town. In 1990 it was moved to the entrance of Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve, making it an ideal location for tourists to enjoy a bit of nature at the same time.
It is a small, modern museum dedicated to the display of the cultural history and human heritage that is Lydenburg. Visitors can learn more about the Pedi people and their culture and history and exhibits from where early humans lived, including the most remarkable find of the Lydenburg Heads. The story of the discovery of the Heads is almost as fascinating as the Heads themselves. There are seven Heads, all intricately carved in ceramic and dated as far back as about 490 AD. They were first discovered in 1957 and are considered National Treasures and for this reason only casts of the Heads are on display, with the originals kept in the Cape Town National Museum.
The Museum is well worth a visit when in the area and don’t forget your camera for a walk around the Reserve after.
