Loerie Dam (Nature Reserve) in Loerieheuwel, Eastern Cape
A thousand hectares of natural fynbos and bushveld, surrounded by beautiful mountains, the Loerie Dam Nature Reserve is a great spot for outdoor enthusiasts looking for relaxation or some outside adventure.
The Reserve is situated just ten minutes outside the small village of Loerieheuwel in the Eastern Cape and only a half hour drive along the R102 for day visitors from Jeffreys Bay. The area is popular with holiday makers who enjoy birdwatching, water activities, hiking and mountain biking and the Loerie Dam Reserve offers all these activities in one place.
Day visitors to the Reserve can stay at the Loerie Ruskamp, wonderful Bush accommodation offering less than 5 km away. Your host here will be available to arrange hiking and mountain bike excursions into the Loerie Dam Nature Reserve on your behalf.
The Dam, which is enjoyed by water sport enthusiasts and anglers, was built as part of the Kouga Dam scheme with the purpose of supplying Port Elizabeth with water. The dam includes a filtration and pump system to balance the pressure in the pipelines, controlled by one of the first computer systems in South Africa.
