Lephalale, Limpopo
Heartbeat of the Bushveld
Lephalale, previously known as Ellisras, is a small coal mining town lying alongside the Mokolo Rivier in the wonderfully scenic Waterberg region of Limpopo.
The Waterberg Savannah Biosphere with indigenous plants, Big Five game animals and hot springs is a real treasure trove. This region has not been fully discovered and spans a vast area of 15 000 square km.
The region is famous among hunters and is also known for excellent fishing in the nearby Molkol Dam. Visitors are most likely to catch sight of most of the Big Five (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino) here and thanks to the mild winter months and moderate summer evenings, Lephalale is a popular venue for camping and stargazing.
Lephalale is a small, peaceful and tranquil but prosperous town, just 60 km from the Botswana border point of Stockport in a malaria free zone. The main tourist attraction in the area is the D’Nyala Game Reserve which is ideal for hiking, picnics and bird watching. There are two excellent hides for game viewing.
There is a variety of accommodation options other than camping such as Hotels, B&B’s and Guesthouses.
