Das Neve's Cross in Northern Region, Kruger National Park, Limpopo
On the S95, close to Letaba, is a portuguese crossed carved out of a Leadwood tree.
The significance of the cross, or exactly who carved it, is uncertain. I is believed that the cross was carved by Diocleciano Fernandes Das Neves, who arrived in Lourenzo Marques in October 1855 at the age of 25 and returned to Portugal 13 years later. During those 13 years, he traded in the interior he was an ivory hunter.
His trade route passed through the Kruger Park. It is possible that he carved the cross on his journey in 1860/61 en route to the Soutpansberg.
