Joào Waterhole

The Joao waterhole was named after Joao, one of the Magnificent Seven elephants in Kruger, who in turn was named af Joao Albasini, a famous Portuguese ivory hunter.

Joao, the elephant was often seen in the Shingwedzi area. He had a left tusk of about 55kg and a right tusk of about 45kg, before they broke off in 1984.

He survived an attack by poachers in 1982.  Kruger Park authorities treated his AK47 wounds, which appeared to heal completely. He is believed to have died in 2000, but his body was never recovered.
