Long Beach

Long Beach, which borders on Noordhoek Beach, is popular with surfers, owing to the powerful waves fom the Atlantic Ocean which rise up over rocky reefs formed by hard sandstone. The soft white sand stretches for 8 km between Slangkop Lighthouse and the Chapman's Peak mountains and is perhaps the most unspoiled and protected beach on the Atlantic Cape Coast. Owing to its immense size the overcrowding that hits most Cape beaches is not a problem here.

Long Beach is a very popular for surfing, horse riding and dog-walking. There is a lovely walk that passes a well preserved 1900 ship wreck, the Kakapo, and from here you can continue all the way to Noordhoek Beach, at the foot of scenic Chapman's Peak.

Another great walk is around Bird Island at the Kommetjie slipway where boats are launched during 'kreef' season. From here you can stroll along the catwalk until you reach the Outer Kom, one of the famous surf spots.

A lovely boardwalk starts here and follows the shore to Slangkop lighthouse and then continues up to a WW II radar station on top of the mountain. Here are sweeping views of the elegant Slangkop lighthouse against the wild ocean backdrop, as well as the rugged coastline all the way south-west to Cape Point and north-east to Hout Bay.

The shallower waters are thick with giant kelp forests which even from a distance, can be seen as a dark mass moving back and forth in the waves.
