South Africa
des couleurs inoubliables

The Sol Plaatje Museum is situated in Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa.

The Museum was once the home of Solomon T. Plaatje, an activist and a writer. He was the first Secretary General of the ANC and his work as a politician, writer and journalist took him on travels all over the world.

Although he was a Tswana speaker, Sol was fluent in at least seven languages and was the first black South African to write a book in English. His works included several books and he also translated Shakespeare’s works and other novels into his home language Tswana.

Sol Plaatje is probably the most forgotten of South Africa’s black leaders and whose legacy seems to have been sadly eclipsed by ANC icons such as Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo. The Museum is very small, only a few rooms, but worth a visit. The Museum also houses the Sol Plaatje Educational Trust and has been declared a national Monument. His grave in the West End Cemetery is also a Provincial Heritage site.
