The solitary little town of Kenhardt on the Hartebees River is a true orphan of the frontier, unaware even of the origin of its own name.
Kenhardt started its life as a rustlers' lair. In 1868 a party of 50 policemen were sent to arrest the rustlers and occupy their lair. The police found only a few ramshackle hovels around a water hole. For some unknown reason the rustlers called the spot Kenhardt.
Today Kenhardt, a centre for karakul sheep and mutton production, is still a very solitary town of the wilderness, having few visitors but it is a sunny, not unpleasant little place with an atmosphere reminiscent of its wilder past.
The salt pan country around Kenhardt is noted for its extremes of hot and cold weather.
Other village settlements in the neighbourhood are Brandvlei, Sakrivier and Vawyksvlei.
