The beautiful suburb of Bassonia is set on the hilly slopes of the Southern Suburbs of Johannesburg and is adorned with prestigious homes making it a very sought after area.
St Martins and Marion College are found close by making it also a very popular area for those with children of school age.
Comaro Street, which is the main entrance into the suburb and consists of both mountainous area, which provides spectacular views in all directions, together with flat land, divides the suburb of Bassonia.
Bordering onto Glenvista to the West and Meyersdal to the East, both suburbs offering affordable and high-status homes, keeps both sales and rentals in Bassonia in high demand.
Bassonia is home to a thriving business community with excellent road networks and the popular Glen Shopping Centre, together with various smaller shopping facilities. It is in close proximity to boutique hotels, conference centres, industrial areas and golfing facilities.
History
Originally inhabited by SAN tribes and later by Sotho-Tswana communities, stone-walled ruins can still be found in the area. Klipriviersberg Nature Conservancy, a mere 10km from the city centre provides many items of archaeological, cultural, historical and geological interest. Also included in the reserve are a wide variety of fauna including larger game species.
The largest concentration camp in Johannesburg was located where the Turffontein Race Course is now and housed 5000 people. The 700 who died in that group were buried on a farm called Klipriviers Berg in Winchester Hills.
