Lake St Lucia in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is 360 square metres in size and is South Africa’s largest estuarine system, formed hundreds of years ago as the ocean receded.
Crocodiles and hippos
Now home to over 1200 crocodiles and 800 hippos it stretches 80 kms long and is 23 kms at its widest point. The lake’s rich fauna includes large flocks of flamingos, pelicans, ducks and a variety of fish and on its eastern shores it is surrounded by enormous forested dunes.
Birds
St Lucia Lake is one of the oldest protected areas in Africa and has become a bird paradise with roughly 530 species recorded. These include Bee Eaters, Curlews, Fish Eagles, Orioles and White Storks.
Reptiles
Reptiles that make their home here include the African Python, the Leatherback Turtle, and the Nile Crocodile.
