Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape of South Africa can be found at the foot of the Kouga Mountains where the famous Garden Route begins. Situated 87 km west of Port Elizabeth, Humansdorp is easily accessible via the N2 Highway and a trip to Jeffreys Bay for a day of exquisite surfing is only 16 km away. An alternative route to Humansdorp is on Route 62, the road you will find this sleepy town on. A far more scenic route, this road is often chosen by visitors to this beautiful part of the country.
Even with all the facilities of a city, Humansdorp still maintains a small town charm and is the ideal base to explore the magnificent coastline, Baviaanskloof Reserve area and Tsitsikamma Forests. Accommodation in the town and surrounding areas includes Hotels, B&B’s Guests Houses, Self-catering and Camping.

At the top of Main Street, the cultural centre of town, you can find an eco-sustainable building where traditional San Art is exhibited. The very scenic Humansdorp Golf Course is well worth playing for the golf enthusiasts.

Climate
The climate is mild and warm with rainfall even if the driest month.
Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 12˚C and 24˚C with fair rainfall all year round, the driest months are December, January and February.
Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 7˚C and 20˚C with August and September being its peak rainy season.
Transport
Commercial Airlines offer flights into Port Elizabeth, the closest Airport. Self-drive trips can be taken with a hired vehicle along the N2 highway or for the more scenic trip to Humansdorp use Route 62.
If you prefer guided tours in the area, there are plenty to choose from along the Garden Route.
Festivals
July – Jbay Winter Festival: World Surfing Championship.
September – Kouga Heritage Festival: Celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Kouga region.
September – Northern Arts Festival: Held close to Port Elizabeth, about 87Km from Humansdorp.
September – Jeffreys Bay Shell Festival: Approximately 250 stalls offering a wide variety of products from food, crafts and activities. Also included is sport, entertainment and live music.

History
Before this area was known as Humansdorp, it was called the Parish of Alexander after the local Dutch Reformed Minister in the region. In 1849, the area received a donation of land from Matthys and Johannes Human to build the Dutch Reformed Church and so got the name Humansdorp.
Today this quiet town serves as the commercial center for the local farming community. It is also one of the major stations on the narrow-gauge Apple Express railway from Port Elizabeth to the Langkloof and a popular stop-over for travellers along the Garden Route.
A notable resident of the town is Cornelia Bürki, a three time Olympic Athlete. She was born in Humansdorp and competed for Switzerland in the Olympics. Know to the town folk as Corrie de Vos, she still lives in the area in a little town called Wagen.
