Hermanus Cliff Path

Hermanus is not only famous for being the best Whale watching spot in the world, but can also boast some of the most breath-taking scenery in the country. The Hermanus Cliff Path offers visitors the best way to appreciate all the little seaside village has to offer.

During whale season, the Cliff Path is the most popular trail in Hermanus. It stretches from the New Harbour in the west to Grotto Beach in the east, just under 11 km in total, and provides some of the world's best land-based whale watching spots. Wooden benches are dotted here and there on the rocks all along the Cliff Path and Gearings Point is ideal to stop and enjoy a picnic while enjoying the unique art pieces. Some may enjoy a restaurant lunch at this point before continuing further for some more amazing seaside scenery.

The Hermanus Cliff Path offers incredible views of Walker Bay and the rugged and beautiful coastline. The path is a natures paradise and as it winds through a diversity of vegetation types it provides many opportunities to see wonderful bird life from African Black Oystercatchers and Cape Bulbuls to Olive Thrush’s and Amethyst Sunbirds. To ensure protection of its fragile ecosystem, the Cliff Path and the fynbos vegetation through which it passes was incorporated into the proclaimed Fernkloof Nature Reserve in 2000.

The best way to enjoy the Path is to walk from the New Harbour so at the end of the Path you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the ocean and a Tuk Tuk can collect you from Grotto Beach if you not in the mood to do a return walk!
