Hantam National Botanical Gardens in Hantam Rural, Northern Cape

The Hantam National Botanical Gardens is located on the Bokkeveld Plateau just outside the town of Nieuwoudtville and welcomes visitors into one of the world's most special biodiversity treasures!

Having been established in 2007, makes Hantam the first National Botanical Garden in the Northern Cape and the ninth in South Africa.

Most of the rain on the Bokkeveld Plateau falls during the winter and spring months of the year so peak season is between August and mid-October. During this time there is magnificent display of wild flowers covering areas of the Garden with a kaleidoscope of colours. Guided tours, using a safari vehicle, for those who would like to leave the Garden with a much better understanding of why Nieuwoudtville and the Bokkeveld Plateau are both so special and different from the rest of Namaqualand.

If exploring on your own is more your thing, one can do a series of nine walks across its length of over 6 000 hectares on several portions of land which includes representative patches of Nieuwoudtville Shale Renosterveld, Nieuwoudtville-Roggeveld Dolorite Renosterveld and Hantam Succulent Karoo.

Enjoy a picnic in a garden with over 80 species of plants, 150 bird species and interesting wildlife such as Cape porcupine, black-backed jackal, chacma baboon, aardvark, steenbok, bat-eared fox and caracal.
