History
The first records relating to the town of Graskop date back to 1843 and the arrival of the Voortrekkers who were searching for a route to the coast. In the 1850's a renowned eastern Transvaal character, Abel Erasmus, known to the Africans as Dubula Duze (he who shoots at close range), had a farm called Graskop ('grassy hill'). From there he exercised rough justice as the native commissioner of the lowveld.
Graskop is also famous for the story of “Jock of the Bushveld”, which dates back between 1885 and 1887. Two chapters of the book are set in this area and Paradise Camp is where Sir Percy Fitzpatrick established his camp.
