The Outeniqua Power Van is situated in George in the Western Province, South Africa

As passengers travel in the railbus from George on to the Oudtshoorn railway-pass, the beauty of the Outeniqua Mountains begin to unfold on possibly the most scenic routes in South Africa. This is truly a breathtakingly beautiful train ride!

Trains depart from the Outeniqua Transport Museum and will travel through tunnels, along passes and past waterfalls and an abundance of King Proteas while a knowledgeable guide narrates details of the resident flora to the history of the ox wagons that used to traverse the hazardous pass. The views from the summit are spectacular and here passengers can relax with a picnic baskets and just enjoy the surrounding scenery. The full journey is approximately two hours with a half an hour stop at the summit. Don’t forget your picnic basket or camera!

An alternative option for the active at heart is to take your mountain bike along on the journey up and then cycle the 15 km Montagu Pass back to George.

Admission

Prices are between R110 and R130. Prices are subject to change so please contact the Transport Museum office directly for confirmation of train schedules and ticket pricing. Booking is essential, maximum 20 passengers.

Climate

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 15˚C and 28˚C with high rainfall in March and October.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 7˚C and 21˚C with the lowest rainfall in June.

Transport

Commercial Airlines offer flights into George Airport. Car hire facilities are located at the Airports. Johannesburg is about 1 170 km by road, approximately an eleven hour drive, but Cape Town is just a mere 410 km to George.
