Giant & Half Collared Kingfisher Trail in Wilderness Section, Garden Route National Park, Western Cape

The Giant Kingfisher Trail is situated in Wilderness in the Western Cape, South Africa.

The Trail is one of the most popular in the area. It is a fairly easy hike, but does require a little effort at the start and slowly gets easier as you continue. The Trail begins at the Ebb and Flow Rest Camp in the Wilderness National Park, along the Garden Route. The trail follows the east bank of the Touw River and travels through the tranquil and beautiful forest area. There are benches strategically placed along the way so hikers can stop, catch their breath and listen to the numerous forest birds. Look out for various Kingfishers and if you luck you may spot the Giant Kingfisher, after which the trail was named. Along the River and over boulder-strewn pools, the trail ends at the swimming hole and a peaceful picnic spot.

The trail’s difficulty level is considered easy. The distance is 3.5 km to the waterfall area, 7 km return and will take approximately three to four hours. Don’t forget, good walking shoes, hat, refreshments, sunscreen, your camera and swimming gear.

Admission

There is no admission fee. A permit, however, at a nominal fee is required and can be obtained from the Ebb and Flow Rest Camp.

Climate

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 12˚C and 27˚C with high rainfall in November and March.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 8˚C and 24˚C with high rainfall in August.

Transport

Commercial Airlines offer flights to George Airport, only 15 Km away from Wilderness. Car hire facilities are located at the Airport and visitors will travel on the N2 Highway.
