The beautiful sheltered little seaside village of Palmcliffe lies 40km south of Durban on the KwaZulu South Coast, nearly half way between Umkomaas and Scottburgh. Compared to most other bustling towns on the south coast Palmcliffe is a restful place where one can side step time and its demands.
The safer main swimming beach at Scottburgh can be reached by taking a brisk walk along a breathtaking long secluded stretch of white sandy beach which is used mainly by the locals and an odd fisherman.
Between Palmcliffe and Scottburgh lies Green Point, a world-class surfing break behind which, high up on the hill, stands Green Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse became a National Monument, and its light is a constant warning to the ships off the world-renowned Aliwal Shoal some 5km out at sea. Aliwal Shoal is a mecca for divers and is rated in the top 10 scuba diving sites in the world.
There are a number of Nature Reserves in the vicinity, including Vernon Crookes and Oribi Gorge. Vernon Crookes with its vegetation and animals and the Oribi Gorge with its ochre cliffs, dense forests and spectacular views.
