Garden Town of Mpumalanga
Ermelo is the main centre of the Grass and Wetlands Region of Mpumalanga, surrounded by sheep, cattle, sunflower and maize farms.
The extensive pine plantations, endless rows of cedars, acorn trees and wattles, and rolling green landscapes make it easy to see why Ermelo is known as the garden town of the Mpumalanga Province. The town boasts a magical beauty and its’ spectacular surroundings afford visitors the opportunity to enjoy numerous outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing and birding.
Ermelo is a town not to be underestimated, the province's tranquil Lake District, which includes the pretty little village of Chrissiesmeer, is only 30 minutes drive away. Carolina is also nearby, and the start of the beautiful Highland Meander with its views and waterfalls that beckon the explorer. Paradise and adventure beckon just over the horizon in every direction!
For a historical experience there are caves and shelters in the surrounding areas, filled with San rock art and at the Le Goya Village, visitors can view the ruins of a settlement that dates back to approximately 1400. Despite the town being totally destroyed during the second Anglo-Boer War, there are still some historical monuments such as the Paul Kruger Bridge and Anglo-Boer War Monument.

History
Ermelo was founded in the 1880’s by Dutch Reformed Church Reverend Frans Lion Cachet, who built the first Church in 1871 on the site which was to become the town. As a young man, Cachet had met and been converted to Christianity by Hermanus Willem Witteveen from Ermelo in the Netherlands and named the settlement in honour of Witteveen.
The town served as an important stopover for ox-wagon trains traveling between Lydenburg and Durban. Ermelo also played a pivotal role in South Africa’s liberation struggle as it was a stopover for the ANC’s Umkhonto weSizwe members who were travelling to Swaziland and Mozambique.
