Duckitt Nurseries Wildflower Reserve, Western Cape
For many years this small reserve, on the R307 between Darling and Mamre, at the turnoff to Malmesbury (R315), has been open to the public. At first as part of Oude Post Farm and then from 1979 as Duckitt Nurseries Wildflower Reserve. One can drive into it and entrance is free.
To name but a few, Duckitt Nurseries Wildflower Reserve is host to the Blue Flaks (Heliophila), Oxalis, Asteraceae family, Geissorhiza Radians (Witring Kelkiewyn), Geissorhiza Monanthos, Ixia Scillaris, Gladiolus Gracilis, Gladiolus Carinatus, Disperis Villosa and the Holothrix Villosa.
Do and don't
- Do leave all gates as you find them
- Do only use ablution facilities provided
- Do take adequate protection not only from the hot sun, but also from zealous insects
- Do wear light, long-sleeved and legged clothing
- Don’t trample plants unnecessarily
- Don’t disturb nature in any way, especially dune areas
- Don’t pick flowers, bulbs or plants. It is illegal.
- Flowers turn their faces to the sun so travel with the sun behind you
- The best time for viewing is during the warmest part of the day (11h00 - 15h00)
- In overcast or cloudy weather certain flowers do not open
