History
Diamonds discovered in the gravels of the Vaal River in 1870 led to the hurried establishment of a town by the former Transvaal government to settle ownership of the diggings. It was named Christiana after the daughter of President Marthinus Pretorius.
The rush of diggers turned it into a boom town, with a rowdy community of prospectors, diamond dealers and liquor sellers. The flat countryside resembled a battlefield, scarred with mine workings and piled high with rubble. Diggers still work in the area, but only a few diamonds remain.
