The Centre for Higher Education & Development (CHED) is unique in the higher education domain in South Africa as research forms a substantial part of the programmes, together with the teaching. The research encompasses a very wide range of activities and consists of six departments:

- Establishing partnerships with each faculty to promote the best environment for academic development

- The designing of postgraduate courses for professional educators working in the field of higher education
History
The Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED) was established in 1999 in rsponse to the widespread shifts in student learning. CHED was designed to provide a single space in which the academic and service needs of UCT's diverse student body are addressed in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
In the 2006 CHD was commended for its national leadership role.
Higher Education Development includes the development of educational opportunities for disadvantaged students as well as the development of the quality of higher education.
The establishment of the Centre was possible as a result of the reconfiguration of the university's upper campus where new accommodation was allocated for this purpose.
