Mandela Rhodes Building in Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, Western Cape
The Mandela Rhodes Foundation was given a much needed boost with the donation of a magnificent building by De Beers Chairman, Nicky Oppenheimer and his Associates. Called the Mandela Rhodes Building, it is situated on the corner of Wale Street and St George's Mall.
The Mandela Rhodes Building was built in 1902 for de Beers by Cecil John Rhodes shortly before his death. This impressive building is situated on the corner of St George’s Mall and Wale Street, facing Table Mountain, Parliament and St George’s Cathedral, and was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. The building was bequeathed in perpetuity and has enabled the foundation to rent parts of the building out to similar organisations thereby securing an income. There is a penthouse that is used for guests of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation that is called The Julian Ogilvie Thompson Suite.
The Mandela Rhodes Foundation maintains offices for the Rhodes Trust and Nelson Mandela Foundation in this building and in addition it has office space at Rhodes House in Oxford, UK and at Mandela House in Johannesburg.
