Discover South Africa
take your head out of the sand

Theronsberg Pass is situated on the tarred R46, 20km north-east of Ceres in the Western Cape province of South Africa.

The pass follows a gentle route with grassy slopes where one can occasionally catch a glimpse of water birds on farm dams that lie within close proximity.

The Theronsberg Mountains take one into the Tanqua Karoo, a gorgeous semi-arid area that is quite simply beautiful with its clear, starlit skies, incredible scenery and enviable sunsets.

History

The Theronsberg, Karoopoort and Hottentotskloof passes were all part of an old wagon route used by late 19th century travellers from the Boland into the interior, before the advent of the Du Toitskloof Pass and the N1.

In 1969 when the totally unanticipated earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale, hit the area, devastating towns like Tulbagh and Wolseley, the Theronsberg Pass was the only road out of Ceres, as parts of Michell's Pass were buried.
