The village of Willowvale takes its name from the wild willows growing in the valley in which it lies.
It was built as an administrative centre for the Gcaleka section of the Xhosa tribe and the seat of the paramount chief of the tribe is a few kilometers away. The area is rich in tribal life.
The road through Willowvale leads on to Qora Mouth and Nqabara Point on the Wild Coast.
