A Historically Significant Site

The Klipgat Caves are situated in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve and can be accessed via De Kelders entrance gate near Gansbaai. These caves were once home to ancient humans, Middle and Late Stone Age, and is one of the most remarkable examples of early human dwellings in South Africa.

Such early remains, dated to about 80 000 years old, have been found in only three South African sites and in the Middle East making Klipgat Caves one of the most important cultural assets in the Western Cape. The remnants of these early lives that have been left behind provides fascinating and important information about the origin of mankind.

The Caves are beautiful and have dramatic views over the ocean and the Walker Bay Reserve through its two “windows” and one small “portal” and a circular boardwalk takes you on a journey through this historical site. The small beach here is great for swimming as it is sheltered and calm, a great way to cool off after the numerous steps and bit of climbing that is needed to explore the caves.

Walker Bay is a picturesque, pristine reserve with an abundance of coastal and marine life. It is known as one of the best spots in South Africa to do land-based whale watching so make sure you spend a little time in the Reserve when you visit the Klipgat Caves.
