The beautiful Pass is relatively unknown, and not to be confused with Botha’s Pass near Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal. It is also virtually impossible to determine the origin of its name as Botha is one of the most popular surnames in the country. What is known however is that the name dates back to the 1800’s as there are some references to it in records about the first Anglo-Boer War and around the time that Barberton was founded.

Botha’s Pass offers incredible panoramic views over the valley and has a number of viewpoints along the way.  The route is safe to travel and to stop along the way to photograph some of the beautiful sites however, do take special care when the road is covered with mist or rain at certain times of the year.

Botha’s Pass and Nelshoogte Pass are driven consecutively, and both are easily incorporated into a number of other scenic drives in the area.
