Centuries ago, long before a village was even thought of, herds of elephants roamed the area and living in harmony with these majestic creatures were the San people, hunter-gatherers who migrated each year as the elephants did, back and forth between the north east and the coast as the seasons dictated.
This continued for thousands of years until one day the now famous pass builder, Thomas Bain, surveyed the area known as Zitzikama. In 1879 he began work on a route that would pass through the Storms River Gorge and in 1884, the pass was completed and the village of Storms River was surveyed and laid out.
As the years went by, the forests of Storms River suffered greatly due to the ever growing timber industry, so the state decided to intervene and begin the preservation of these beautiful trees. The coastal area south of Storms River was declared a National Park which brought a new era of tourism for Storms River. A handful of retired forestry workers remain and kept the village as their home and gradually hunting lodges and even a hotel opened. As tourist began to discover this village, the development of more tourist facilities and adventure activities grew.
