Mphongolo loop is considered to be the most beautiful routes in the area with the gravel road twisting through magnificent riverine forests with massive trees and spectacular views of the riverbed.
Large herds of buffalo and elephant can be seen on this route, with lions, leopard on occasion. Nyala, kudu and mongoose are common sightings along the S56.
The Babalala picnic spot is located at the one end of the road, a rustic picnic spot where stretch your legs, have a meal and a toilet break before continuing your journey. You can rent a gasbraai or buy firewood at the site.
The S56 is 100 kilometers (62 miles) long.
