Kelly’s Beach is one of South Africa’s most prestigious international Blue Flag beaches assuring safety, cleanliness and the upkeep of environmental standards. It lies 1.5 km’s from the Kowie River estuary mouth in Port Alfred, the heart of the Sunshine Coast.
The warm waters of the Indian Ocean provide the perfect conditions for water sport enthusiasts, from surfers to body boarders. The water temperatures is above 18˚C most days, and reaches temperatures in excess of 25˚C during summer months. Surfing at Kelly’s Beach is a popular, with beach breaks that offer both right-hand and left-hand waves. With the wind coming mainly from the north-west, swells in excess of three metres are fairly common.
It is a great swimming beach, the demarcated swimming area on Kelly’s Beach offers parents with young children gentle conditions to play in and Boogie boards can be hired so that children and adults can have fun in the waves together. Being a Blue Flag beach, there are lifeguards, changing rooms and first aid facilities.
Two viewing decks offer fantastic viewpoints from which to watch stunning sunsets, surfers and whales and dolphins in season.
The south-east coastline of South Africa is characterised by its largely unspoilt sand dunes and sections of vegetation, with Kelly’s Beach fitting the mould splendidly. The soft beach sand is ideal for building large sandcastles and will keep children amused for hours. Pack up the family, a delicious picnic lunch - Kelly's Beach is considered to be one of the best beaches in South Africa with its clean soft brown sand, small waves and warm water.
