Let’s Go For A Ride

The Pietermaritzburg Model Engineering Society (PMES) was founded in 1922 and resurrected into a train amusement park, open every first Sunday of the month since 1970.

The PMES hopes to foster an interest in all things involving trains and engineering by building and exhibiting miniature replicas of various locomotives, engines. Machine tools and other engineering related projects. All projects are to the original working specifications and there is a great emphasis on steam preservation.

This unique train park invites visitors to buy a ticket and enjoy a ride around the miniature railway circuit on any of its four locomotive trains, which are powered either by diesel or steam. Both adults and children can enjoy a ride and although the rides are by no means exhilarating they are unquestionably interesting as the trains negotiate sharp bends, cross bridges and travel through a tunnel.

Visitors are also encouraged to bring along a picnic or braai basket and make use of the beautiful open park area. The grounds are large, well-kept, and secure, allowing the children the opportunity to play outdoor games. The venue has a small refreshment kiosk for visitors who forget their lunch at home.

The PMES is a unique venue that offers families a safe and affordable way to have fun together while appreciating the beauty of nature and enjoying the ingenuity of man at the same time.
