- Piet Retief
Named after the Voortrekker Pieter Retief who was killed by the Zulu King Dingane in 1838 the town was established in 1883 and today nestles between massive timber plantations.
The town was almost completely destroyed during the Anglo-Boer War.
eMkhondo (Piet Retief) is a centre for timber, paper, wattle, mica, kaolin and iron.
The department of Arts and Culture published the name change of Piet Retief to eMkhondo in their government notice No. 24 of Gazette No. 32898 on the 29th of January 2010.
