The name Patensie, said to be from a Hottentot word meaning 'a resting place for cattle', is given to a village which is the trading centre of the farms of the broad valley of the Gamtoos River.
Citrus fruits, tobacco and vegetables grow here.
A branch of the Apple Express, the narrow-guage railway from Port Elizabeth, ends at Patensie.
