The Best in Afrikaans Performance Art
The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees, known as the popular KKNK Festival, takes place annually in Oudtshoorn. The week-long event is considered one of South Africa’s largest, and most popular, arts and cultural festivals, attracting thousands of visitors each year!
The inaugural event took place in 1994, making this popular festival over 20 years old. KKNK is a predominately Afrikaans language event with some English incorporated into the program. It is jam packed with cutting-edge theatre productions, kid’s entertainment, visual arts instalments and plenty of live music on the Rivierbuurt stages. The festival is certainly on of our country’s best with a superb recipe for entertainment which includes most of SA’s finest talent!
The festival location, the small Karoo town along the well-known Route 62, is normally quiet and unassuming by nature, but comes alive with festivity during this event! The main streets will be closed off to traffic and instead are lined with street vendors and buskers, turning the quiet town into a street party!
Besides the distinct party feels of the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunsfees, the festival is a culturally significant event on the Afrikaans calendar, showcasing the best in Afrikaans performance art, with many shows making their debut here. It is also a great event in which to observe or participate in some of the more subtle Afrikaans cultural activities such as the sokkie dance and braai broedjies!
And many, many more……
