- North West
In the 1880s a Scotsman, Simon Fraser from the Orkney Isles off the coast of Scotland, owned a small gold mine on the farm Witkoppen on the banks of the Vaal River.
Here the town of Orkney was proclaimed in 1940. Orkney is a mining town with a laid-back ambience.
Fraser's mine is now used as a ventilation shaft by the giant Vaal Reefs Mine, which dominates the town named after Fraser's homeland.
Tours through the largest gold mine in South Africa can be arranged on request.
