The Sun City Resort was built in 1979 by the hotel magnate Sol Kerzner as part of his Sun International Group. It was then located in what was known as Bophuthatswana as it had been declared an independent state by the then apartheid South African government. As an independent state it was allowed to offer gambling and topless extravaganza shows which were currently banned in SA.
The Sun City Superbowl has been host to many famous musicians who have held concerts here before and after the apartheid era. Some bands include: Status Quo, Queen, Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, Simple Minds, Rod Stewart and Elton John.
