SA's largest motorcycle ride
South Africa’s largest motorcycle ride, the Toy Run, sees some 65 000 motorcyclists in 18 cities and towns across the country take part in the annual event at the end of November. The Cape Town leg starts at the Grand West Casino in the north and Grand Parade in the city where big-hearted bikers collect teddies and toys for children in disadvantaged communities.
The Parade sees two-wheeled machines of all kinds, so look out for the Harley’s and Ducati’s, adorned with colourful toys as they ride the route through Cape Town to the drop off/donation area at the end venue at Killarney Racecourse. The public are encouraged to watch the parade from designated viewing spots and if you have your own bike, you are welcome to join in for free!
Entry to the donation drop off zone is also free, so please bring along a toy for this very worthy cause! The children receiving these donations are from orphanages, shelters, places of safety and other homes where a simple toy or gift is seen as a luxury. The number of toys donated is how many children get to receive one, sometimes for the time, ever!
At the end of the route the bikers, friends and family all gather for some festivities and once again the public are invited to join for a small entrance fee. Visitors will be entertained by local bands and comedians and the kids will have their own designated kids’ entertainment area. A beer garden along with delish food stalls will ensure all who join in will be well rewarded for their time!
