The schooner Tonga was wrecked on 10 May 1875 north of the mouth of the Lovu River. The ship was carrying groceries for Durban shops and rather than let the cargo go to waste the sailors set up a store on the beach and sold water damaged goods.

The store was known by the Afrikaans name Winkel ('a shop') and Winkelespruit became the name of the holiday resort that they developed there in later years.
