Mvezo is a small rural village in the Eastern Cape, on the banks of the Mbashe River, not far from Mthatha.

Birthplace of a great Statesman

The village is mainly known as being the birthplace of the late former South African President, Mr Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918 - 05 December 2013).

Mandela School of Science & Technology

The R100m Mandela School of Science & Technology will open in January 2014.

History

When Mr Mandela's father was deposed as the Mvezo Chief, his family relocated to Qunu where Nelson spent his childhood, and later built a modest retirement home.
