Battery Creek Waterfall in Kaapschehoop & vicinity, Mpumalanga

Battery Creek Waterfall is situated in Kaapshcehoop just 30 km outside Mbombela (Nelspruit) in the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.

A permit must be obtained at the Koek-en-Pan Restaurant in town. Visitors may as well gather goodies for a picnic from their delicious treats before setting out for the day. A short, moderate hike of about 10 minutes will lead visitors through a plantation and into a gorge where the 30 metres high waterfall can be found. The entrance to the Waterfall trail is next to a graveyard and signage will direct you further for easy accessibility.

The Waterfall was named by the locals as the old Miners had a battery of stampers to crush the rocks to extract the gold.

The pool at the bottom of the waterfall is deep enough to swim, but some just enjoy standing under the water for a good massage. The Falls are known for their breathtaking beauty and clear water. It is a quiet and peaceful spot for visitors to appreciate the outdoors and relax.

Admission

To do the waterfall hike, visitors first need to obtain a permit from the Koek-en-Pan restaurant in the main road in Kaapsehoop. Please contact them directly to obtain this, a nominal fee is charged.

Climate

Nelspruit experiences its rainfall in the summer months, with December and January seeing the highest levels.

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 17˚C and 29˚C.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 7˚C and 23˚C.

Transport

There are Domestic flights into Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport on a daily basis. Car rental companies are available for easy access around the area and it will take approximately 27 minutes (27.5 km) from the Airport to Nespruit along the R40.

Road trips from Johannesburg to Nelspruit will take approximately three and a half hours (358 km) via the N12 and N4 Routes.
