The Nelson Mandela bridge was judged in 2003 by the SA Institute of Civil Engineers as "the most outstanding civil engineering project achievement in the technical excellence category."
The Nelson Mandela Bridge can be found in Braamfontein in the centre of Johannesburg linking the two business areas of Braamfontein and Newtown from Carr Street in Newtown to Queen Elizabeth Street in Braamfontein.
The bridge received a “face lift” in 2010 by the addition of lighting that was done by Phillips for the 2010 Fifa World Cup. The lights change colour and are most impressive, especially when seen from the M1 motorway. 24 hour surveillance has been added to the bridge due to the theft of the copper wiring.
Nelson Mandela himself opened the bridge on 20 July 2003 with a festival race that consisted of a 21km half marathon, 10km road race, 5km fun run, and 4OOm race for children.
