A cattleman named Hamman built a stockade to protect his livestock from the lions which formerly roamed the Springbok Flats and the town named after him serves a large Bantu population.

Hammanskraal is about 40 km north of Pretoria where the R101 and R734 route meet.

From Hammanskraal, a road leads to the Pretoria Salt Pan, where mineral salts are extracted from the crater of an extinct volcano.
