The Trail is within the Goukamma Nature Reserve and visitors can enter the reserve on the Buffalo Bay Road, off the N2. This is a circular trail of 6.5 km and should take between two and three hours. The hike begins with hikers wincing themselves on a ferry ride across the Goukamma River after which hikers will find themselves walking along a fynbos ridge with clear views of the estuary, river and ocean.
Hikers can either do the return route through the Milkwood Forest or along the Skimmelkrans Beach, just be sure to lookout for the “Goukamma” sign if you choose the beach option so you can join up with the trail again! A third option would be to continue ahead, not doing the circular trail, through the reserve and ending at Groenvlei.
Various mammals can be spotted along the trail and birdwatchers can listen out for the Fish eagle or the chatter of the Black Oystercatchers. The hike is truly a satisfying one and will take you through some of the most beautiful scenery along the Garden Route.
The hike is rated as easy and manageable for children from about 12 years and older. Be sure to take along plenty of water as there is none along the route, and perhaps some snacks for a picnic stop. Also remember your sunscreen, hat and proper shoes!
A permit is required for this trail and the cost is approximately R40 per person. Permits can be bought at the Goukamma Nature Reserve Office at the start of the trail.
