When planning a beach day, many people overlook Gordons Bay Main Beach and head straight for the Blue Flag beach known as “Bikini Beach” around the corner. However, just because the main beach does not have a sign that declares it as a Blue Flag beach, doesn’t mean it is any less stunning.
One of the things that make this beach great is the excellent parking-to-beach size ratio. There is a massive parking area decorated with palm trees – come early enough and one of these will gladly provide your car with some nice, cool shade – which is connected to the beach with a strip of grass where you can sit in comfort if you do not want to get sand everywhere.
There is also a walkway that starts at the caravan park’s side of the parking area, runs all the way along the main beach, and finally ends at Bikini beach. So if you feel like walking from beach to beach, just follow the red brick road!
For the most part, the main beach is not pet friendly, but if you want to bring your furry friend for a walk, the stretch of beach in front of the caravan park is dog friendly – just remember a plastic bag so that we keep the beach nice and tidy.
The beach offers various swim spots, most of which are relatively shallow, which makes it the perfect beach to take the kids for a swim. Another point in favour of the kiddos is the fact that the bay is secluded from the open sea thanks to the mountain on the left as well as the reefs that act as natural barriers, meaning that the waves are seldom bigger than about knee-high.
If you get tired of sitting on the beach, you can pop into Uncle Barry’s for an ice cream swirl or sit down for a bite to eat at any of the various restaurants and coffee shops.
If you are a bookworm or you are looking for the perfect gift for a friend that is, make sure to stop by Bikini Beach Books. In this quaint little second-hand bookstore you can find anything from that book you remember reading as a kid, to a new cookbook for your wife so that she can make something else than a tuna salad for a change.
The main beach at Gordons bay is so much more than just a beach!
