Rondebult Bird Sanctuary is situated in Germiston, in the Province of Gauteng, South Africa. Germiston is about 26 km outside of the city of Johannesburg.

The Rondebult Bird Sanctuary is set in 9.5 hectares comprised of wetlands and grasslands and is home to almost 200 species of birds. It has a superb reputation as one of the best birding spots in Gauteng. The seven well situated and secure hides are well camouflaged so as not to frighten or compromise the activities of the wildlife.

The cold winters experienced in this area attracts the breeding duck species and the warm summers’ brings flocks of migrant waders making the Sanctuary a perfect spot throughout the year. Some of the species found include the African Snipe, Yellow Wagtail, Orange Breasted Waxbill, Maccoa Duck, Greater Flamingo, Purple Gallinule and the March Owl.

Admissions

The Park is open every day, between 07h00 and 17h00.

No admission fee is charged.

For security reasons it is advisable to visit in groups and be on the alert.

Climate

Germiston has warm, wind free summer days and crisp clear winter afternoons.

Summer months, November to March will have average temperatures of between 12˚C and 26˚C.

Winter months, May to August will have average temperatures of between 3˚C and 19˚C.

Transport

There are Domestic and International flights into Johannesburg’s O R Tambo Airport. Taxis, Hotel transfers and car rental companies are available for easy access around the area.
